Wintermission is Underway!

There was a different kind of energy on campus last week as Wintermission began Monday morning. Faculty offered new and different opportunities, and students are experienced earning with a different style and pace as they moved from the classroom to buildings across campus and to off-site locations.

Down at the Maintenance Shop, students in “Chix Who Fix,” taught by Fine Arts Department Chair Karin Thorndike and Tina Bowman of the Maintenance Department, got their hands dirty while learning the basics of how to change a tire and a few tips and tricks as well. “The Daily News” students were busy in Schoolhouse critically analyzing news sources and stories. Special visitor Tara Connell, a seasoned news professional, shared her experiences in the industry with the class. English teacher Steve McCarty’s “Songwriting” students made joyful noises in Roomies on the piano, drums, guitar, and even the ocarina!
Off-campus ventures included a variety of internships and classes. Students in “Self Defense” traveled to Leesburg for a class at The Basics Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy. “Flea Market Flip” students purchased fabrics and materials at stores in Leesburg for the “flea market” finds they repurposed and reworked in the STEM Lab. And the “DC Museum Experience” class logged many hours in Washington, DC, last week, visiting the Spy Museum, the Newseum, and the United States Botanic Gardens, just to name a few!

The entire community also enjoyed a variety of special afternoon activities, from yoga and dance to game nights and film screenings. We’ve documented Wintermission in the Wintermission 2017 gallery -- we hope you enjoy seeing a glimpse into this special term!
