Varsity Basketball Warms Up for Think Pink Tourney with a Win

The Varsity Basketball Team opened 2015 athletic action in fine style Thursday with a 50-27 victory over Wakefield Country Day School in Huntly.

Sadly, the win does
not count in the Delaney Athletic Conference Division II standings because WCDS -- which reached the VISAA Division III state tournament with a 16-5 record two years ago -- has had so much trouble fielding a team that the school decided to "undeclare" its status in the DAC before the season began. By undeclaring its status, WCDS will still play teams in the DAC Division II but none of the games will count in the standings.

Junior guard Alex G. led Foxcroft with 24 points -- the most scored in a single game by a Foxcroft player since the school joined the DAC in 2008. Point guard Pipsy S. '16 also played a key part  with a fine all-around game that included 10 points, seven assists, five steals and four rebounds. Forward Kat F. '16 chipped in with eight points and six rebounds while only playing about half the game.

All 11 players on the roster saw action giving the players some much-needed minutes on the floor after the long exam and winter break. Mia M. '18, Marley B. '17, Serena H. '16 and JiMin Y. '16 each scored two points.

The Varsity, 2-1 and 1-0 in conference, faces two DAC teams tomorrow in the Sixth Annual Think Pink Basketball Tournament. Although the games are not full-length and don't count in conference standings, how the girls play against Division II rival Randolph-Macon Academy (at 9am) and Division I Wakefield (12 noon)  should tell coaches Patrick Finn and Fred McMane a lot. The Varsity also plays St. James School at 1 pm, with the two schools' JV squads facing off at 2pm. Click here for the complete Think Pink Tournament schedule.

With the DAC Division II considerably weakened by WCDS’ status and Fredericksburg Academy's move up to DAC Division I, Foxcroft has emerged as the favorite to win Division II. The team has already beaten Randolph-Macon and will play St. Michael, Quantico and Tandem Friends in the coming weeks.

Tomorrow's Think Pink Tournament runs from 9am to 3pm with 13 teams from seven schools playing a score of games in foxcroft's Athletic/Student Center. Admission is free but concession sales of food and t-shirts, along with donations, will benefit the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation.
