Two Students to Sing at NATS Mid-Atlantic Regional Auditions Saturday

Stephanie Z. '15 and Carli M. '16 competing in Musical Theater category for a chance to advance

Scores of talented student singers will gather at the University of Maryland in College Park Saturday for the Mid-Atlantic Region Auditions of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) -- and two Foxcroft girls will be among them! Stephanie Z. '15 and Carli M. '16, who qualified for the event with outstanding performances at the Viginia State Auditions in Norfolk last month, will be singing in the High School Musical Theater category.

According to their teacher, Foxcroft faculty member Amy Asbury, the girls have worked very hard and are up to the challenge. "I don't know exactly how many they'll be competing against, but it will be a lot because there will be students competing from four states and Washington, D.C.," she said. "Plus, because they are in the same Musical Theater category, they will actually be competing against each other."
Saturday's auditions, which are closed, begin at 9:30am Saturday. Carli will be performing "Part of That" by Jason Robert Brown; "Pretty Funny" (Pasek and Paul); and "I Could be Happy With You" (Sandy Wilson). Stephanie's repetoire consists of "Before It's Over" (Pasek and Paul); "Still Hurting" (Jason Robert Brown); and "Is It Really Me?" (Harvey Schmidt).

Only three singers in each category will advance. This year, the next stage will be a "national online screening round," where the top singers from regions across the countries will submit a video for adjudication by a panel of national judges.

In April, 14 singers in the High School Musical Theater category will be selected to perform at the semifinal round July 7 at the NATS Summer Workshop in Greensboro, NC. Three of those semifinalists will advance to the Final, also scheduled for July 7. Prizes awarded to the best performers will total $30,000.

Carli and Stephanie earned their spots at the regional with terrific performances at states, where students had to demonstrate a command of vocal skills in both the contemporary Broadway "belt" style and in the more classical "legit" style from musical theater's Golden Age (1960s and earlier). More than 200 individual male and female high school students competed, with approximately 40 in the same age/level Musical Theater category as the Foxcroft girls.

NATS is the largest professional association of teachers of singing in the world, with more than 7,000 members in the United States, Canada, and nearly 30 other countries. It celebrates the art of singing through a series of competitions and programs designed to showcase talented singers and performers.

State and regional chapters annually host auditions at which students sing and then receive scores and written feedback about their performances. The auditions begin with a preliminary round, in which students sing only for a panel of adjudicators and perhaps a small audience.

The top performers receive scholarship prizes and move on to the regional round. There, the winners of each category perform again immediately in an Honors Recital, competing for additional scholarship money. The level of adjudication at which you compete is based on your age/year in school and how long you have studied voice. In order to be eligible to sing for NATS auditions, students must study with a current member of NATS.
