Think Pink Tournament Raises More than $3,000 -- Along with Two Champions

The sixth annual Think Pink Tournament, held at Foxcroft School on Saturday, January 10, provided a red-letter day for basketball aficionados -- and a bright green day for the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation.

Twenty-one games were played -- three going on at the same time -- over six and a half hours with teams participating on a varsity and middle school level and one junior varsity exhibition game thrown in for good measure. There was more than enough spirited hoops action for all -- and admission was free.

Meanwhile, thanks to the good work of Foxcroft's Athletic Association, more than $3,000 was raised to benefit the CBBCF, which supports breast cancer  treatment, support, education and research in Loudoun and surrounding counties.

Fredericksburg Academy emerged as the champion of the varsity competition and Wakefield School (The Plains) captured the middle school title. St. James School (Maryland) defeated Foxcroft in JV action.

Varsity and middle school competition consisted of a modified round-robin with two shortened periods and a running clock. The JV exhibition was played in regulation time under high school rules.

Foxcroft went 1-2 in varsity competition, defeating Randolph-Macon Academy and losing to Wakefield and St. James. Gerstell Academy of Finksburg, Md., participated in the varsity tournament for the first time and made a strong showing. Fredericksburg Academy defeated St. James 38-30 in the championship game. FA had earlier beat Wakefield, which had won the first five titles.

The school took home a trophy all the same after its Middle School team defeated Loudoun Country Day, Randolph-Macon, and Quantico. Fredericksburg Academy and LCDS had two wins a piece while Quantico and RMA failed to collect a win.

The annual tournament is a fundraiser for the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation. Food, concessions, the sale of “Think Pink” shirts and a free-will offering raised money to help fight against cancer. Foxcroft School has raised more than $50,000 for the local foundation over the past eight years through this tournament, the Cherry Blossom Walk, Run and Pooch Prance, which it also hosts on campus, and other fundraising efforts.

Two Foxcroft students -- senior Lilly P. and sophomore Mary Park D. -- sit on the CBBCF Board, a rare privilege for high school students.
