They Have Arrived! Senegal Group is Welcomed in Koussanar

After a long and exhausting journey from Foxcroft to Dulles Airport to Dakar to Kaolack and finally to Koussanar, Senegal, 10 Foxcroft students and two faculty members were welcomed Saturday with a wonderful party including dancing and music. Read more about their adventures on the Where's Foxcroft? blog this week as they spend Wintermission sharing time, energy, and medical support with the people of this small village.

Thanks to a partnership with a non-profit organization in France that trip leader and Director of International Programs Arnaud Boulestreau has worked with for a number of years, the girls will join professional opticians and ophthalmologists in the distribution of used eyeglasses, helping to fit these eyeglasses  -- which they collected from the Foxcroft community, family, and friends -- to the many Senegalese people in search of corrected vision. They will also help with other tasks, such as painting classrooms, teaching classes, or cooking for the children.
One of the main goals of the trip is also for the Foxcroft group to work together to assess the needs of the village and to prioritize its time accordingly.  The group has experience setting goals. After the girls were selected last spring, they set some goals to accomplish before the trip. They were:

-- To collect 500 pairs of used glasses from family and friends.
-- To collect $1 for each pair of glasses to hire and train Sengalese doctors to give eye exams so that the right corrective lenses get to the people who will see better with them.
-- To raise $3,500 to build a new classroom in Koussanar. During the trip Foxcroft students will paint and organize classrooms in this school.
-- To create an emergency fund of $1,000 to address unforeseen issues that are discovered by the group during its visit.

They worked hard, collecting glasses over the summer and holding fundraisers this fall, to reach those goals and did pretty well. Now they are in Africa, experiencing so many different things -- we can't wait to hear all about it when they get back. In the meantime, we can all get a glimpse by following the blog.
