Taylor sings her way to a spot at the regional NATS competition!

Taylor W. '12 placed second in the state Saturday in the Freshman/Sophomore Musical Theater Category singing competition at the Virginia Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (VANATS) Conference Saturday at James Madison University. The performance earned the 13-year-old sophomore a trip to the MidAtlantic NATS Competition and Conference, scheduled for April 1-2 at Shenandoah University.
Taylor was one of four Foxcroft girls, all students of Dr. Susan Merryman, who participated in the student auditions which highlight the annual conference. Sophomore Christina C., and junior Luisa B. competed in the musical theater and classical music categories, respectively, while freshman Brianna E. took part in both classical and musical theater contests.

Taylor bested all but one of the contenders with her repertoire of show tunes, including “Someone Else's Story” from the musical Chess, and the Broadway classic “I'm Gonna Wash that Man Right out of my Hair” from South Pacific."
“It is amazing to think we have a state winner right here at Foxcroft!” said Dr. Merryman. “This is a huge honor and Taylor is well deserving. She worked hard, practiced relentlessly, and polished her songs for several months.”

Designed to be an educational experience for participants, who receive feedback from the judges, many of whom teach on the University level, VANATS is very competitive because it draws students from some of the top performing arts schools and voice studios in Virginia.
Christy received a near perfect score from one

judge and was cited for her "outstanding performance” and "expressive and charming" voice. Singing in one of the most competitive classical categories, Advanced Junior Women, Luisa was commended for her “expressive and highly musical” presentation of Faure's “Pie Jesu” and her “mastery of style and language" in Handel's "Bel Piacere.” Judges from the classical category praised Brianna for her excellent Italian diction, lovely vocal quality, and excellent range. In the musical theater category, Brianna's performance was described as “vibrant” and “expressive.”

“All of the girls gained so much valuable feedback on their voices and performance skills,” said Dr. Merryman. “Their dedication to the art of singing amazes me and I am so incredibly proud of each of them.”
