Successful Book Drive More Than Doubles Collection Goal!

On February 11, Foxcroft presented over 1,300 books, school supplies, and DVDs to Books for America. According to the book drive organizer, Junior Lilly P., the idea for the drive began while attending the Hugh O’Brien Youth (HOBY) Leadership Conference last June. “At HOBY, they asked us to think of a service project and make a plan for implementing it over the next year. I’ve always loved reading and I have been accused of never being out of hands' reach of a book. Since books are such an important part of my life I knew I wanted to do something related to literacy. I researched a lot of ideas, including starting my own non-profit organization, when I found Books for America online.”
Books for America (www.booksforamerica.org) collects all types of books, which are distributed to adult and youth literacy programs, youth centers, transitional homeless shelters, hospitals, inner-city and rural schools, military bases, assisted living communities for seniors, veterans hospitals, women's shelters, hospices, and other such organizations. "Books for America was already doing all the things I thought of doing," continued Lilly, "so I decided to funnel my efforts into supporting them. I organized the book drive with the goal of collecting possibly 500 books. That we more than doubled that number is because of the generosity and support of the Foxcroft and Middleburg community.”

All kinds of books came in from faculty, staff, family, friends, neighbors, and Foxcroft students. Being a residential school, Foxcroft girls don’t always have a chance to collect a bunch of books in their rooms before the end of a term but that didn’t stop them from participating -- and some even got creative. Junior Soo Min made a financial contribution that purchased over 200 books, including much-needed foreign language books, from local thrift stores like Blue Ridge Hospice in Purcellville and The Resourceful Women’s Thrift Store in Leesburg.
“In these boxes there are so many great books, and so many amazing stories. I am just thrilled that Books for America can take them and share them with shelters, and prisons, and hospices, and children who might not have books. It's so exciting to think that any one of those books could help someone's life."
