Sports Roundup: Nov. 3 A Big Day on Tap

Field Hockey plays for the DAC title at home, Volleyball and Cross Country in action on the road

A tie was the perfect present for Foxcroft’s Varsity Field Hockey team last Friday. A 1-1 tie with Episcopal High School, the #5 ranked team in VISAA Division I on Friday (Oct. 28), enabled Foxcroft to move up one spot to #8 in the ratings, moving ahead of Potomac, which lost to Episcopal, 4-2. If the team can hold onto that position this week it will make the state tournament, which begins next week.

A big test comes today (Thursday, Nov. 3), when Fredericksburg Academy comes to campus to play for the Delaney Athletic Conference championship.
Foxcroft has beaten FA twice this season — the first time that has happened since 2010, when the schools began playing each other twice a year — and the visitors will be fighting to keep it from becoming a three-game sweep.

Only the top eight schools qualify for the VISAA Division I tournament and, after recently being moved up from Division II, Foxcroft has battled its way up from the #10 spot among many larger schools, an impressive accomplishment.

A pair of local girls, sophomore Haley B. and senior Elle L., were key performers as Foxcroft forged the tie at Episcopal in Alexandria. Haley scored her 19th goal of the season, on an assist from Middleburg sophomore Loren S., and Elle had a stunning 12 saves in goal.

Foxcroft followed up its tie with Episcopal with a home 8-0 rout of John Paul the Great Tuesday (Nov. 1). Senior captain Lindsay W. had a hat trick to lead the rout.

Volleyball
Varsity Volleyball reached the semifinals of the DAC tournament with a solid 3-0 victory over Seton School in Middleburg on Tuesday (Nov. 1). The squad meets top-seeded Trinity Christian in Fairfax in a semifinal match at 5pm this evening (Nov. 3).

Against Seton, senior Reilly C. led the team with 19 digs, five service aces, and eight assists. Alex A. '17 had six kills and five blocks and Maddy G. '17 had seven assists for Foxcroft, which also got 17 digs from Leah S. '19, 15 digs and six kills from Mia M. '18, and 13 digs from Savannah H. '18.

Foxcroft finished #11 in the final VISAA Division I ratings, out of the state tournament by three placings. Four opponents Foxcroft defeated in the regular season, however, will play in the state tournament, in lower divisions. Middleburg Academy, Trinity Christian, and Fredericksburg Christian are Division II selections and Chelsea Academy will likely play in Division III.

Tennis
Foxcroft’s young tennis squad defeated Trinity Christian, 6-1, Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the DAC tournament but lost Wednesday to Seton, 4-3, in a semifinal match.

Sophomore Holland D. won her #2 singles matches against both Seton and Trinity and split her doubles matches with partner Isabel S. ’17. Lily F., another sophomore, won both her singles and doubles (with partner Maggie E. '20) matches against Seton. Though the team will lose a four-year letter winner Isabel S. when she graduates this spring, this young team appears to have a bright future.

Cross Country
The Cross Country team will compete against 11 other schools in the DAC championships today at Burke Park in Fairfax. Senior Brittany H. leads a squad that is determined to improve on the fourth-place finish it posted in DAC meets earlier this year.
