Shootout at the Fox/Hound Field

Hounds edge Foxes on overtime strokes in Field Hockey Big Game

It was like deja vue all over again for Pipsy S. '16.

Two weeks ago, the junior midfielder lifted Foxcroft to a first-round victory in the state field hockey championships by scoring on the last of 10 overtime penalty strokes following a regulation game and overtime period. Saturday, she did it for the Hounds, capping an exciting afternoon of fiercely- and fairly-fought field hockey by stepping up to the ball and flicking it past Fox goalie Elle L. '17 on her team's last-chance penalty strokes to decide the first Fox/Hound competition of the year.

This time Pipsy's shot gave the Hounds the shootout, 3-2, and lifted the Hounds Big Team to a 1-0 triumph over a disappointed Fox squad that had played its heart out all afternoon. It also gave the Red and Yellow a sweep of the day: earlier, the Puppy Team had won Little Game, 2-1, and Hound Mia M. '18 took New Girl Runnings.

The day didn't feel as lopsided as that sounds. The Foxes fielded two strong teams and both games were close -- and exciting. And when it was over, it was 'Friends to the End," as always, as virtually the entire student body took the field to sing their songs and beat their drums once again.
In Big Game, regulation ended in a 0-0 tie after Elle came up big with some terrific saves for the Foxes and the Hounds kept the Foxes in check. Some had expected an easy win for the Hounds, who had four VISAA Division II All-State field hockey players and a couple of All-State tennis players on their squad. But Fox Big Team captains Charlotte S. and Serena H. had prepared their team well.

For overtime, the two teams each sent seven players, counting goalies, onto the field in hopes of breaking something open but it was not to be. The shootout ensued, with fireplug forward Laney M. '16 and steady Allison B. '17 scoring for the Hounds and sisters Charlotte S. '16 and Pia S. '18 netting the ball for the Foxes. After eight penalty stokes, the score was still tied.

That's when Pipsy stepped up and did what, it seems, she always does: Score!
The Foxes had one last opportunity but Hound goalie Jessie H. '16 stopped the shot.
