STEM-ulation! Fourth Annual K2M Summit on Tap for Feb. 21

How popular has Foxcroft’s unique STEM competition become? In December, our 12 teams filled up before you could say “Science, technology, engineering and math really are fun for girls at Foxcroft!”

A unique interscholastic team competition organized by our Math and Science faculty, K2M: the STEM Summit has become a highlight of the winter – for students at Foxcroft and beyond. Both the high school and middle school divisions have waiting lists for this year’s event, slated for Saturday, February 21!
Last year, more than 150 girls from 19 schools participated, and dozens of teachers, family members, and friends came to watch them wrap their brains and creative energy around the challenges set up in the Athletic/Student Center and Schoolhouse science labs. This year, 20 high school teams from seven schools will compete in the morning and another 24 teams from 14 middle schools are expected for the afternoon session.

In both divisions, teams of four students will work to solve problems that draw on a variety of STEM skills. The specific challenges are always a surprise but in the past, students took on such creative challenges as “Murder She Wrote,” in which they solved a crime by logical deduction; “A Bridge Too Far,” which involved building the strongest 40 cm bridge possible with popsicle sticks and rubber bands; and a genetics puzzle called “Who’s Your Daddy?”

K2M, Inc., a biomedical company which specializes in medical solutions to spinal disorders, is sponsoring the event for the fourth year. Engineers from their Leesburg headquarters, will design one of the challenges.
