STEM Turns into STEAM with Our Next Visiting Niblack Artist

Julia Sutula brings her vision for the design of everything to Foxcroft
Monday, March 30 at 8:50 am

The Helen Cudahy Niblack ’42 Arts Lecture Series was established by Austi Brown ’73 in memory of her mother. Since it began in 2007, the series has brought a variety of literary, performing, and fine artists to Foxcroft to share their work, stories, and perspective on the nature of the creative process with both students and the larger community. One of the goals of the Niblack series is to provide an artist with the opportunity to share her artistic journey in a comfortable and familiar setting, creating space for an exchange of ideas that just might inspire a Foxcroft girl or two to chase her own artistic dreams.

You’ve seen – or perhaps you’ve tried to use – one of those faucets that requires you to hold down the button with one hand for water to flow, making it impossible to wash both hands at once. Or maybe you’ve tried valiantly to open plastic clamshell packaging without injuring yourself or damaging the product it’s protecting. These maddening examples demonstrate what industrial designers are trying to avoid. Rather, what industrial designers are trying to achieve with their products is form, function, efficiency, and yes, even beauty -- think of the iconic iPhone or the red-topped Kikkoman Soy Sauce bottle -- thoughtfully designed products that are easy to use and have a beauty all their own.
Our latest visiting Niblack artist, Julia Sutula, is an award-winning industrial designer who blends science and art seamlessly, and who uses her multidisciplinary background in biology, studio art, and industrial design to create and improve on products to meet the needs of users. Whether it’s a Starbucks vending machine or a child’s car safety seat, Julia believes that everything has a design. She has received multiple product design awards from the Industrial Design Society of America and Industrial Design Magazine and has had her work featured in several publications. Julia will share her creative journey with the Foxcroft community at Morning Meeting on Monday, March 30th, and then lead a workshop for the girls in Dr. Maria Eagen’s Engineering class.

Please feel free to attend the Morning Meeting presentation on Monday, March 30th, if it works with your schedule!
