Pretty and POWERFUL in Pink: Nanette's Walk

cw
Getting up early is not a favorite experience for teenagers, but more than 50 Foxcroft girls were up and at it bright and early Saturday (Sept. 15) so they could take part in Nanette’s Walk for breast cancer. Foxcroft was recognized for having the largest contingent in the Middleburg walk to benefit the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Fund, a local organization that supports cancer research, raises awareness and helps local residents get tests and treatment.

Named in memory of longtime Middleburg resident (and erstwhile neighbor of English Department Chair Stewart Herbert) Nanette Hewitt White, who lost a 10-year battle with breast cancer in 1999, the walk covered two miles and drew a total of about 300 people. More than $11,000 – nearly twice the organizers’ goal – was raised at the walk.

Walkers were asked to raise $50 each in order to participate but Mrs. Herbert found a local sponsor, Beth Glenn, to supplement our girls’ fund-raising efforts. Ms. Glenn and Nanette’s Walk organizer Patty Jarvis attended last Friday’s Morning Meeting, to accept a $500 check presented by Adrienne Teeley ’08, Head of Foxcroft Reaching Out, and speak with the girls. The Foxcroft funds were raised through a bake sale and allocation of Student Council money.

The two women -- both “breast cancer warriors,” as Ms. Jarvis calls those diagnosed with the disease -- were overwhelmed by the showing of the School, just about every member of the community was wearing a pink shirt or blouse (and almost all of them met the dress code!) to show their support for the cause. “The good news,” Glenn told the assembly, “is that breast cancer is one of the most treatable of cancers… You are empowered to take control of your own body and to be aware of what you need to do and to share that with other women. You’re awesome!”

The next morning, scores of girls rubbed the sleep from their eyes as they loaded into minibuses driven by faculty volunteers to drive to the Middleburg Fitness Center. A number of day students and their families met the Foxcroft group, which was decked out in white and green Foxcroft T-shirts. Thanks to Mrs. Herbert, the Office of Student Life and all the other faculty who helped to organize this event -- and to all the girls who came out to show their support!
