Parents' Night Out Produces Smiles All Around

Parents were smiling because they had some time to themselves. Children were smiling because they had a wonderful time. And the baby-sitting students of Foxcroft School were smiling because they had raised nearly $900 for Sadie's Smile Foundation. Oh, and they had so much fun that they might just do it again. Soon.

In a special event called "A Night to Yourself," Foxcroft students and faculty cared for 37 (!) children, ages 1 to 12, Saturday evening (March 31) in the Foxcroft Athletic/Student Center. With about 30 students and 5 adults, the ratio of babysitter to child was amazing and it cost only $25 for one child and $10 for each additional child, dinner included. Whether they played games and sports in the gym, made art in one of the brightly-lit team rooms, or read stories and watched movies in the spacious lounge, the youngsters had fun.

The money raised will go to Sadie's Smile Foundation, which was founded by Sara Ablard, a Licensed Professional Counselor who works at Foxcroft. After her daughter died suddenly last summer at the age of 5, Ablard chose to honor her by raising money for Smile Train, an international nonprofit that provides cleft palate surgery to children in need.

During her brief lifetime, Sadie herself supported Smile Train. When Sadie learned about the difficulty children with cleft palates have, she was so moved that she asked her parents to help her raise money for the organization instead of giving her any Christmas presents. They raised $500 -- enough for two corrective surgeries -- to Sadie’s delight.

Ablard has a much loftier goal now of raising $478,250 – enough to fund one child’s surgery for every day of Sadie’s life. She is organizing a 5K run, scheduled for May 12 in Purcellville, to help her reach that goal. And you can expect many of the Foxcroft students who gave parents a “A Night to Yourself,” to be there with friends -- of all ages!
