Mckenzie rides to a third and a fifth at Nationals!

In her first appearance at the Interscholastic Equestrian Association National Championships last week in Upper Marlboro, MD, Mckenzie C. '13 earned third place in the Varsity Open on the flat and fifth in the invitation-only Equine Journal  Varsity Open Championship!

Mckenzie, the only Foxcroft rider to qualify for Nationals in the School's first year of IEA competition, was one of just eight riders called back from among 19 qualifiers from all over the U.S. who competed in two preliminary sections on the flat.  She rode beautifully in the final  to earn the yellow ribbon, behind Heather E. of Good Shepherd Farm in Yaphank, NY, and Ariana M. of Blue Water Equestrian Team in West Broward, FL.

After the Open classes for both flat and over fences were complete, 10 of the 38 riders -- including Mckenzie -- were invited to compete in the Equine Journal Varsity Open Championship. Each rider completed two tests, one over fences and one on the flat -- and Mckenzie was awarded fifth place!

The meet was held at Show Place Arena/Prince George's Equestrian Center and due to the size of the meet, Riding Director Nelly Sheehan took five Foxcroft School horses -- Diamond, Compari, Jack, Riley and Willie  -- and student helpers Allie D.'12 and Miranda G. '13 to assist with them all week. Riding Instructor Laurie Feickert and freshmen Meredith K, Caroline H., and Grace H. joined them on the weekend to help with the horses and support Mckenzie.

In early April. Mckenzie placed second on the flat in Varsity Open Equitation at the IEA Zone 3 finals to become the first Foxcroft student to qualify for the IEA Nationals. At that show, held at Stone Bridge Farm in Natural Bridge, VA, Mckenzie was one of eight riders among 12 competitors chosen to do an individual test. She was one of only two riders to do the test correctly and placed second to earn the trip to Nationals.

She also rode well over fences , but had a close distance to her final fence and earned a fourth-place ribbon. Mckenzie also ended the year as the Individual Varsity Open Reserve Champion High Point Rider for Zone 3.

Congratulations to Mckenzie and thanks to all the girls and faculty members who supported her!
