Mckenzie Is Named National Reserve Champion at IEA Finals

Senior Mckenzie C. earned second place in the Varsity Open on the flat and fourth place in the invitation-only Varsity Open Championship last weekend (April 20-21) at the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) National Championships held in Syracuse, NY. She will also receive between $1,500 and $2,100 in scholarship money for college.

The IEA Nationals showcase riders who had survived local, regional and zone qualifying events to participate in the largest high school equestrian competition in the United States. This was Mckenzie’s second appearance in as many years.
Mckenzie drew a challenging mount Friday in the Varsity Open Flat Individual competition but managed to get the horse to behave well enough that she was one of just eight riders to advance to the final. On Saturday, Mckenzie rode to second place, one spot better than a year ago, to earn the Reserve Champion title.

After the Open classes for both flat and over fences were complete, a select group from among the 30+ riders was invited to compete in the Varsity Open Championship. Each rider completed two tests -- one over fences and one on the flat -- and Mckenzie placed fourth.

In February, Mckenzie won the Varsity Open Flat class at the IEA Zone 3 Finals held at Garrison Forest School in Maryland to earn the trip to Syracuse. The Foxcroft Team, competing at Zones for the first time, finished sixth among 11 teams at that show.
