Mary '13 wins first sanctioned steeplechase race, is featured in Baltimore Sun

Junior Mary M., one of a handful of teenage girls with a jockey license from the National Steeplechase Association, won her first sanctioned steeplechase race earlier this month when she rode her horse Woodmont to victory in the John D. Schapiro Memorial in Monkton, MD on April 16.  Not only did she win but Mary also broke the 2002 race record for the race, which had previously been six minutes, 15 seconds. She won in 5:59.

The performance earned her a place on the front page of the Baltimore Sun's Sports section the next day.  Several days later, The Steeplechase Times had a story on the amzing teenager,, who takes advantage of Foxcroft's unique Exceptional Proficiency Program to train during the school week.  She has also been featured in the Fauquier Times-Democrat and in a feature in Middleburg Life  which is also posted on the Leesburg Today website.

Last fall, Mary and her horse, Woodmont, made their debut in big-time steeplechase racing and performed well, placing fifth in the Steeplethon at the International Gold Cup and third in a major race at the Pennsylvania Hunt Cup. This spring she has become a regular on the circuit!

Mary bought Woodmont with money she had been saving to buy a car. She is able to train and compete on the elite level thanks, in part to Foxcroft's Exceptional Proficiency Program, which allows students in good academic standing to miss some school commitments to pursue a special talent and passion.
