Making a Career of Making a Difference

Patrick Evans of the UN shares his story

One of the many reasons that Foxcroft students know the value of giving back is the fascinating role models they encounter from time to time. On Friday, April 27, Patrick Evans, who works with the United Nation Food and Agriculture Organization and is currently stationed in Sri Lanka, shared his story with the community, inspiring students and faculty alike with the things he has done and the challenges ahead.

"Pay attention to what is going on around you," he said. "You want to enjoy your life, of course, but find a passion and a path that can address some of the major issues in the world. It might be very rewarding and you you might be able to affect and help a lot of people."
Evans joined FAO nearly 30 years ago after serving in the Peace Corps in Paraguay and getting a master's in international forestry management at Penn State. He works with local and national organizations to fight hunger. He had been stationed in Nepal, Bhutan, Cambodia, and Mongolia before moving to Sri Lanka in 2008. For many years he was a project manager but he now serves as the FAO representative, which is more of a diplomatic position, and oversees a staff of 120.

Evans shared some of the specific projects and challenges he has helped address and discussed climate change, population growth, and the need for more plentiful water sources as the main obstacles to feeding the world.

"We need bright young minds to work on these challenges," he said. "You are all at a very exciting stage of life. You all have choices. You are not locked into any one thing. Be active. Be alert to what is going on around you. Live with an open mind and have a good life!"
