Leland '17 Earns Gold Key, Three Others Honored in Prestigious Art and Writing Contest

Junior Leland B. leads a group of four students whose work was selected for special recognition in the prestigious Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition.

Leland’s ceramic tea pot earned the highest award -- a Gold Key -- in the Glass & Ceramics category in the Southeast regional competition. The work will be automatically entered into the national competition, results of which are announced in March. The top works in the country will earn National Medals and be celebrated at a ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Two other artists, senior Rose S. and sophomore Catalina W., earned honorable mention in the Painting and Mixed Media categories, respectively, while junior Hannah B. received Honorable Mention in the Personal Essay & Memoir writing category for her essay entitled “Salvage.”
Established in 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is the nation’s largest, longest-running, most prestigious visual and literary arts program recognizing accomplishments of students in grades 7–12. Nationally, students submitted more than 320,000 works of art and writing in 29 categories.

On the regional level, Foxcroft’s entries were among 68,000 submissions to the Southeast Region, which extends as far south as Florida and Louisiana, west to Kentucky and north to Virginia.

Judges evaluate student work based on originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal vision or voice. Former winners of Scholastic Awards include Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Sylvia Plath, filmmaker Ken Burns -- and Foxcroft’s own Karin Thorndike, Head of the Fine Arts Department.
