It's Wintermission!

There are absolutely no midwinter blues at Foxcroft this week as learning has moved beyond the usual textbooks and term papers, frequently taking place outside the traditional classroom and occasionally happening entirely off campus. Wintermission, a process-oriented, one-week term designed to shake things up by giving students a chance to learn in a different context, has launched!
The variety of adventures and creative endeavors the girls are engaged in this week is astounding. It includes hands-on endeavors like making a movie, creating a collaborative paint-by-grid masterpiece, and designing a fitness circuit along the cross-country course, as well as in-depth studies of jazz, Japanese culture, and "The Whole Horse." Twenty girls have gone to Space Camp in Alabama for a week; another group just returned from a three-day stay at an ashram in Yogaville, and others have ventured to the National Gallery, a concert in Charlottesville, or to see the very first ice hockey game of their lives. And two girls have internships working with historic artifacts at the nearby Farmer's Delight Plantation!

Classes are augmented by a buffet of opportunities to try something new, such as taking a "barre" or hip-hop dance class, playing bridge, or making felted animals. Special meals and trivia contests celebrating Mardi Gras and Valentine's Day and a visit by a professional hypnotist add to the excitement.

"We are hoping for our girls to develop new tastes for learning and realize their own capacity to incorporate formerly unknown flavors," says Librarian and Wintermission chief Steve Matthews. "There are innumerable options during this week for students to embrace a new idea or intellectual realm that will help them show their versatility and mastery to prospective colleges, or perhaps serve as a powerful theme for a college application essay." For now, however, blogging is the medium by which students are sharing their adventures with each other and the wider community.
