Into the Future: Career Development Day, January 30

Be a part of our Internship and Career Development Day, Jan. 30!

According to a recent survey of employers, internships are the single most important credential for recent college graduates to have on their resume and -- thanks to the expertise and energy of one of our parents -- students will have a special opportunity to learn about internships and at an “Internship and Career Development Day” on January 30, from 11:30am to 4pm.
Organizer Gretchen Ann Eagen, a Foxcroft parent who works as Recruitment and Retention Specialist at the Regional Hospital of Scranton (PA), has conducted surveys of our students to determine their career and internship interests. Now, she is reaching out to individuals and businesses, especially in those fields, to participate in the fair. Participants will attend a special luncheon in Brick House and then set up in the Athletic/Student Center for the three-hour fair.

Gretchen announced Thursday that the Salamander Spa and Resort that opened this fall has signed on and a number of accomplished Foxcroft alumnae have expressed interest. She is excited by the building momentum and hopes to have many parents, alumnae, and local businesses participate.

The overall purpose of the event is to provide students a more in-depth overview of various careers. Students will learn whether taking certain courses or choosing a major when applying to college is important for a given profession or industry, as well as how to interact with professionals and acquire a mentor or internship (or hear about possibilities). The day before the fair, Gretchen will make a presentation to students about how to interact with the career representative at the fair and how to pursue internships for spring and summer break.

According to a survey sponsored by the Chronicle of Higher Education and APM’s Marketplace last year, internships, employment during college, and other work experience beat out choice of major, GPA, college reputation, and other academic credentials in significance when looking for a job.  Foxcroft has been working to create more internship opportunities, especially during the Wintermission term.

Gretchen, who also provides private career coaching services to individuals, has successfully placed over 100,000 individuals domestically and internationally. She has also started several mentor and job-shadow programs for high school students.

If you are interested in participating, or know someone who is, please fill out the registration form. If you have suggestions for participants, please contact Gretchen at 570.878.9795 or geagen@yahoo.com by January 10, 2014.
