How to Get Into College . . .

University admission reps share insights at panel

More than 150 students and parents Tuesday night attended an outstanding College Admission Panel in Engelhard Gymnasium that featured representatives of five popular colleges. The students came away knowing a lot more than when they arrived and, no doubt, feeling a bit more prepared for the college visit and application process.

Organized by Director of College Counseling Barbara Conner, the event was open to all members of the Foxcroft community as well as students and parents at three other independent schools in the area. Ms. Conner has initiated a collaborative series with Highland School, Middleburg Academy and Wakefield School that will include an essay-writing workshop, a college fair and a session about learning styles and differences and the college process.

At Tuesday's panel, each representative spoke briefly on a different topic and then took questions. The line up:
  • Sarah Quin of Vanderbilt University on "How Colleges Read Your Application;"
  • Lauren Sefton, Rhodes College, on "Maximizing Your College Campus Visits;"
  • Matt Burkhead, Roanoke College, on "Experiential Learning Opportunities  (i.e. internships, study abroad, research opportunities);
  • Elizabeth Dugas, University of Alabama, on "Making the Most of a Large School Experience;"
  • Merav Frazier, University of Virginia, on "Great Essay Writing for College Applications."
 All of the speakers shared a number of inside tips with the predominant pieces of advice being for applicants to: a) ask lots of questions, and b) be sure to present themselves in their own voices in essay-writing, extracurriculars and other "personal pieces."

Those personal pieces are where a girl can really differentiate herself from the pack and that can make a difference in admission decisions, but the basics  -- academic record, test scores and the like -- remain key. As one rep put it, "The personal pieces can heal the sick but they cannot raise the dead."
