Foxcroft to Host Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation Walk on October 16

Great Day Washington previews event on live TV

On Sunday, October 16, Foxcroft School will open its beautiful 500-acre campus to the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation (CBBCF) for the 10th annual Cherry Blossom Walk, Run, and Pooch Prance for Breast Cancer.

Hundreds of participants, including the entire Foxcroft student body, participate annually in this spirited event. This year, though, the crowd may be even larger than usual, following a four-segment preview that Great Day Washington (WUSA9) broadcast live from campus Tuesday (Oct. 4) morning.

During the visit, Great Day's Meaghan Mooney interviewed a number of people, including Head of School Catherine McGehee, students Mary Park D. '17, Ellie S. '18, and Siobhan O. '17, and Fine Arts Department Chair Karin Thorndike. With the help of the many pink-clad Foxcroft and Middleburg community members (and dogs) on hand, Mooney captured some of the spirit of the fun and important event, which raises thousands of dollars to help Loudoun area women diagnosed with breast cancer.
Known as Nanette's Walk in memory of Nanette White of Middleburg, the race starts at 1 pm on October 16. On-site registration opens at 11:30am; online registration is available now on the Foundation's website. Register as an individual or with the Foxcroft Parents' Association Team!

The Cherry Blossom route will follow flat school roads as well as Foxcroft's scenic and wooded cross-country course. After several years of holding multiple, simultaneous walks in such locales as Leesburg, Ashburn, and Warrenton, the CBBCF has returned to staging just one event.

The Middleburg walk was held at the Middleburg Bank and Hill School from 2007 through 2012, with Foxcroft students always comprising the largest contingent of participants. It moved to the Foxcroft campus in 2013, when the School kicked off its centennial celebration with a worldwide Day of Service. The Cherry Blossom Walk was the day's flagship event and has been a Foxcroft fall ritual ever since.

In the past decade, the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation has granted almost $750,000 to local organizations to help women with breast cancer. The all-volunteer non-profit also annually recognizes outstanding individuals and organizations fighting breast cancer with the Cherry Blossom Champion Award -- which Foxcroft won for the second time last spring.
