Foxcroft students star at Bland Music competition

Nicole '13 wins vocal division; Luisa '12 and Claire F. '12 place second in vocal and instrumental, respectively

Singing two very different pieces -- one folk and one classical -- Foxcroft students Nicole M. '13 and Luisa B. '12 swept the top two places in the vocal division Monday evening (Feb. 28) at the Middleburg Lions Club's Annual Bland Music Contest held at Hill School. Violinist Claire F. '12 earned second place among the instrumentalists for her incredibly beautiful and technically difficult rendition of Vivaldi’s Summer.

Seven students represented Foxcroft in what turned out to be a very competitive evening of performances.  The instrumental division featured piano, guitar, and violin while the vocal division included Broadway, classical and folk tunes. Nicole’s pure voice soared through the lush sounds of "Homeward Bound," a folk song arranged by Jay Althouse, and Luisa’s rich classical voice was shown off to great advantage in her performance of "Pie Jesu" by Gabriel Fauré.

Certificates of participation were also awarded to Rebecca C. ’14, Taylor W. ’13, Brianna E. ’14, and Christy C. ’13.

The Bland Music Scholarships Program, named in honor of James A. Bland, who wrote "Carry Me Back to Ole Virginny," was established in 1948 to assist and promote cultural and educational opportunities for the musically talented youth of Virginia. It is open to any boy or girl, vocalist or instrumentalist, properly sponsored by a Virginia Lions Club. Any resident of Virginia (or within the club jurisdiction) attending elementary, junior or senior high school is eligible to participate.
