Foxcroft raises $2,000 for Hurricane Katrina Relief

Dozens of Foxcroft School students and faculty members played and many more watched, cheered and contributed funds this week in a spirited flag football fundraiser that netted $2,000 for Hurricane Katrina relief.

The tournament, played last Sunday (9/18), was organized by Senior Class President CC, together with the other class presidents and the Student Council. It pitted teams from each of the four classes against each other. There was also a just-for-fun game between faculty and all comers -- including students and parents.

The senior class won the tournament, but Hurricane Katrina victims, both two- and four-legged, will be the real winners. CC announced Friday that some of the funds raised will be donated to a local humane society group that is traveling to the Gulf to help rescue abandoned animals. Kelly Boswell, a 2003 graduate of Foxcroft and veterinary assistant at the Middleburg Veterinary Hospital, is participating in that mission. The remainder of the funds will be given to an as-yet-undetermined relief organization.

Each participant in the tournament paid to play and solicited donations from others. In addition, the Student Council, several Foxcroft dormitories and other members of the community contributed monies to the effort.

Head of School Mary Louise Leipheimer had offered to match whatever amount the faculty raised and ended up writing a check for $548. The Board of Trustees, on campus for their fall meeting, heard about the initiative and took up a collection of their own to push the total dollars raised to a nice round number.

Foxcroft had previously reached out to the victims of Hurrican Katrina by offering thoughts, prayers and a possible new school home to those affected on September 2. So far, the school has enrolled one New Oleans student who has temporarily relocated to the Middleburg area. Several other inquiries were received. Individuals who are still in need of a new school for their daughters, or who know people who are, should contact the school.
