Foxcroft advances to state semifinal with 11-8 win over Fredericksburg!

Olivia Jane '13 and Emma '15 each scored three times and Foxcroft came alive with nine goals in the second half Tuesday to defeat Fredericksburg Academy, 11-8, in the first round of the Virginia Independent School Athletic Association Division II Girls Lacrosse Tournament. It was the first state tournament victory for Foxcroft since 2007.

Foxcroft will play top-ranked Cape Henry Collegiate in the semifinals, scheduled for Friday at 4pm at Old Dominion University. The Championship game is planned for Saturday at 1pm. In 2007, foxcroft beat Covenant School in Charlottesville before losing to the Potomac School in the semifinals.
Despite outshooting the visitors 11-6 in the first half, Foxcroft played to a 2-2 tie. After giving up a quick goal following halftime, the home team erupted for three scores in three minutes to take a 5-3 edge. In a nerve-racking or exciting -- depending on your perspective -- exchange over the next eight minutes, FA pulled within one goal, then fell behind by three when Emma scored twice in 45 seconds, and then drew within one again. That made it 7-6 with 12:01 remaining in the game.

Foxcroft finally took control of the game with another Emma goal with 11:32 remaining and two by OJ, on terrific assists by Charlotte M '12 and Lily M '14 for a 10-6 edge. OJ assisted on the final Foxcroft goal by Lizzie '12.

"We were a little worried there for a while," admitted Coach Michelle Woodruff after the game.

Juniors Spencer, Carter, and Caroline, and sophomore Lily M. accounted for the other Foxcroft goals, Lily and her sister Charlotte had 10 ground balls between them and Caroline and Kate E. '14 controlled three draws each.
