Foxcroft Tabbed a Top High School in Virginia AGAIN!

For the second year in a row, Foxcroft School has been selected as one of the top high schools in Virginia by Virginia Living Magazine. Foxcroft’s hands-on approach to engineering in co-curricular programs and academic classes earned the Middleburg girls boarding and day school a place among the commonwealth’s top schools in the Science, Math, and Technology category.

In 2013, Foxcroft was honored in the capital improvements category and for its unique Exceptional Proficiency Program. Top High Schools and Colleges 2014, a special section of Virginia Living's September/October issue, hit newsstands September 5.
The special section, which debuted in 2013, celebrates excellence and innovation in Virginia’s high schools and colleges, recognizing extraordinary programs and development in five categories: Arts & Humanities; Science, Math & Technology; Capital Improvements; Performing Arts; and Health & Medicine. After careful and thorough review of hundreds of public and private schools, Virginia Living’s editors identified a select group that have instituted programs or made capital improvements aimed at strengthening students’ experience in the classroom, on the field, and in their communities.

Foxcroft’s terrific Project Green Build seminar, through which 23 students learned about all aspects of construction and design in monthly sessions with architects and engineers involved in building Stuart Hall, was big factor in Foxcroft’s selection. The seminars included presentations by professionals, hands-on activities, and hard-hat tours of the building site as the progress of the emerging dormitory was followed to teach girls about the construction process from fundamentals of foundation systems to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. A similar seminar, following the renovation of Court Dormitory, began in March.

The Engineering Projects in Service Learning or EPICS program, developed at Purdue University and used in Foxcroft’s engineering classes, also drew mention. A prime example of how Foxcroft makes STEM subjects compelling for students, whether they think of themselves as being science/math-oriented or not, EPICS is a project-based, service learning program through which teams of students provide engineering solutions for non-profit organizations, learning the entire engineering cycle and using a variety of STEM tools and processes along the way.
