Foxcroft Spring Sports Opens with Lacrosse Match on Thursday

Foxcroft’s varsity lacrosse team, which finished as runner-up in the VISAA Division II state final last spring, opens its 2014 campaign Thursday with a non-conference home game against Christchurch School (VA).
Despite losing three All-State players to graduation, Foxcroft returns several key players from last year’s squad, including First Team All-State midfielder Alex G. ’16 and Delaney Athletic Conference Player of the Year Emma R. ’15, a Second Team All-State choice. Other key contributors returning are midfielder Lilly M. ’14 and defenders Kate E. ’14, an honorable mention All-DAC selection last season, Kelly B. ’14, and Tori W. ’15.

Led by Alex, who scored 56 goals, and Emma, who added 54, Foxcroft posted a 14-3 record and won the DAC Championship in 2013. The team then won a pair of games in the state tournament before losing a tough 13-11 contest to Covenant School in the championship.

Soccer and softball will begin play next week. The soccer team, captained by junior Hannah A. and junior Kat W., hosts Middleburg Academy on Tuesday, April 1, and the softball team, captained by seniors Amalia S. and Vivian T., visits Quantico on April 4 for its season opener. Softball has already had two games moved back on the schedule because of inclement weather.

Soccer went only 3-6 last season, including a 1-6 record in the DAC, but new head coach Arnaud Boulestreau thinks this year’s squad is vastly improved.

“I believe we have some players who can put the ball in the net, which was a problem last year,” said Boulestreau, who coached the junior varsity last season. “And our defense should be very strong.”

Softball played only three games in 2013 because of lack of players and poor field conditions. But five players who were in the starting lineup last year return and the team welcomes the addition of pitcher Carolina W., a sophomore who has had experience pitching in high school.

“At least we’ll be able to field a team this year,” said Fred McMane, who is beginning his seventh year as head coach. “Last year we had a lot of injuries and illnesses and it was tough to find enough able bodies to put on the field. We are still inexperienced as far as actual game action is concerned, but we are looking forward to competing.”

JV soccer opens its season on the road against Chelsea Academy on April 10, the same day that the JV lacrosse team plays its first game, at home against Pope John Paul the Great (Dumfries).
