Foxcroft Alumna Produced Feature Film About John James Audubon

Audrey Bruce Currier Library’s largest and perhaps most wonderful volume is the giant John James Audubon ”folio” housed in Audrey B. Currier Library. Many people are familiar with the amazing naturalist, ornithologist and artist who meticulously illustrated some 700 species of North American birds. Few people, however, know anything about Audubon’s adventurous and inspiring life story.

Thanks in part to Foxcroft alumna Caroline “Cina” Alexander Forgason ’73, Audubon’s intriguing tale recently has been brought to life in a documentary feature film called Rara Avis: The Life of John James Audubon. Cina is the executive producer of the film, described as “an ambitious project that aims to inform and captivate viewers today just as Audubon’s paintings did when they were unveiled” nearly 200 years ago.
Rara Avis had its world premiere at the Environmental Film Festival in the Nation’s Capital on March 25. It was directed by Al Reinert, a two-time Academy Award documentary filmmaker and screenwriter, whose credits include the script for Apollo 13 and the acclaimed 2013 documentary An Unreal Dream. John Aldrich, a PBS, Discovery Channel and National Geographic television veteran, served as producer/editor/cinematographer of the project.

Foxcroft Head of School Cathy McGehee, Director of Institutional Advancement Marion Couzens and history teacher John Scharfenburg were at the E Street Cinema screening, which included a discussion with the three filmmakers and Flo Stone, founder of the Environmental Film Festival in the Nation’s Capital.

Cina has an abiding interest in the environment, having served on the boards of the Nature Conservancy of Texas, the national Peregrine Fund, and the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.
