Lilly earned that distinction and will study intensive Latin, introductory Greek, and Roman culture at Randolph-Macon College from June 23-July 14. Kate will also attend one of the Foreign Langage Academies, a full-immersion Spanish program, while Lydia and Alicia have been accepted to two Governor's Summer Residential Schools, in the Humanities and Mathematics, Science, and Technology, respectively.
All four girls underwent a rigorous application process to gain admission to these programs, which offer some of Virginia's most able students an intensive academic experience. Students must be nominated by their high school, which is allowed only one nomination per program, and then advance through regional and state-wide stages based of a number of criteria.
Those selected to participate in Governor's Schools live on a college or university campus for up to four weeks during which time they are involved in classroom and laboratory work, field studies, research, individual and group projects and performances, and seminars with noted scholars, visiting artists, and other professionals.
Alicia, a Delaplane resident, is one of a small group of students from across the state who will participate in the
Summer Residential Governor’s School for Mathematics, Science and Technology from June 30–July 27 at Lynchburg College. She is head of Foxcroft's environmental club, Blue Planet, as well as a three-sport athlete who has twice been selected to the All-Conference field hockey team as a goalie.
Lydia has been accepted to the
Summer Residential Governor’s School for Humanities at Radford University, which runs from June 23–July 20. The Leesburg resident is a talented singer, dormitory leader, and scholar, who was selected to Foxcroft's Cum Laude Society recently.
Kate and Lilly, the only other juniors selected to Cum Laude, are both outstanding scholars and athletes, with eight varsity letters each and several all-conference nods. Kate, who lives in Middleburg, will spend June 23-July 14 at Washington & Lee University, the venue for full-immersion
Foreign Language Academies this summer.
