Five Lacrosse Players Receive All-State Recognition

Alex '16 named Player of the Year again; Finn and Woodruff repeat as Coaches of the Year in VISAA Division II

Junior midfielder Alex G. was named VISAA Division II Player of the Year for the second year in a row and four other players from Foxcroft’s championship team were honored with All-State recognition, Athletic Director Michelle Woodruff announced Monday night at Spring Sports Awards.

Woodruff and her co-coach, Patrick Finn, were repeat selections as Division II Coaches of the Year, senior team captains Emma R., Tori W. and Cortney C. added.
Joining Alex on the All-State First Team are senior attack Emma R., junior midfielder Pipsy S. and junior defender Serena H. Senior defender Tori W. was named to the Second Team. Emma and Pipsy were both named to the First Team last year as well.

Alex had 13 goals in three games during the VISAA Championship Tournament, but it was her stunning last-minute, game-winning goals in the semifinal and the title game last weekend that brought Foxcroft its second title.

In Friday’s semifinal against Virginia Episcopal School, Alex scored with 27 seconds left to give Foxcroft a 13-12 victory. The next day in the championship game against Highland School, she ran the length of the field after intercepting a pass to score with four seconds remaining for a 9-8 victory. Alex, who scored 70 goals for the season, also collected six goals in an 18-3 rout of Trinity Christian School (Fairfax) in a VISAA quarterfinal match.

Emma had 14 goals in the three VISAA games, including eight against VES in the semifinal. She also had four assists in that game for a 12-point effort. Emma finished the season with 63 goals and 36 assists and concluded her four-year career as a varsity starter with school records in goals (237), assists (131) and points (368).

Pipsy was both an offensive and defensive force for Foxcroft. She had five goals, including one in the final, and three assists in the tournament. She also provided key defense with two ground balls in each of the last two games and a strong play helping to defend Foxcroft’s goal and on transitions. Pipsy was third on the team in scoring this year with 28 goals and was second in draws, with 33, behind Alex (58).

Serena anchored the defensive unit, using her height and speed to halt offensive attacks a number of times. She also scored a goal in the quarterfinal match.

Tori, who missed part of the championship game after taking a hard hit to the wrist, posed a problem for many opposing attackers because she is hard to get around. An energetic, hustling player, she kept after attackers by using her stick well and forcing attackers to change direction. She had two goals in the quarterfinal.
