Field hockey Varsity opens season with a tie

Varsity field hockey, which won the last two Delaney Athletic Conference Championships and went to the Virginia State Tournament last year, opened its season at home Friday with a 2-2 tie vs. cross-town rival Middleburg Academy.

Sophomore Olivia Jane J. scored both Foxcroft goals. Freshman Lily M. assisted on the first, scored early in the second half, and sophomore Cat R. assisted on the second. Junior Claire F. made a game-saving stop in front of the Foxcroft goal late in the game to preserve the tie.

Foxcroft is without nine players from last year's squad including All-Loudoun Player of the Year Dish Harris, All-Loudoun and All-Conference goaltender Hilary Kee, who had nine shutouts as a senior, and two other All-Loudoun picks. Senior co-captain Meredith B., an All-Conference selection, leads a group of seven returning players, four of whom were freshmen last year.

The squad also has new leadership with Michelle Woodruff succeeding two-time Coach of the Year Katie Ryan Kantz as head coach and athletic director at the Middleburg school. She is assisted by 2005 Loudoun Player of the Year and All-Met pick Jessi Coil, who recently graduated from Kent State University, where she was a standout for the NCAA Division I hockey team.

In an interesting sidelight, the Middleburg Academy team was coached by Ruth Marshall, a 1981 graduate of and former teacher and coach at Foxcroft. Marshall's daughter, Ashton, was one of Foxcroft's leading scorers the past three year and is now a freshman at Christopher Newport University, where she plans to play lacrosse.
