FIVE FOXCROFT LACROSSE PLAYERS NAMED TO FIRST TEAM ALL-STATE

Sophomore Alex Grace tabbed as Player of the Year

Five players, who led Foxcroft to a perfect season that culminated in a VISAA Division II state championship, have been selected First Team All-State, Athletic Director Michelle Woodruff announced Wednesday.

Sophomore midfielder Alex G., who set a single-season school record with 92 goals, was chosen as Player of the Year. Junior attack Emma R., sophomore midfielder Pipsy S., senior midfielder Lilly M., and senior defender Kate E. also were First Team choices. Alex also was a First Team choice last year and Emma was a Second Team selection.

Patrick Finn and Michelle Woodruff, who share the coaching duties for Foxcroft, were named Coaches of the Year by VISAA, the Virginia athletic association of independent schools.
The All-State team was chosen by a VISAA committee from names submitted by coaches whose teams participated in the postseason tournament. Grace and MacDonald also were First Team All-State selections in field hockey last fall while Steyn received Honorable Mention.

Alex turned in an exceptional performance in Foxcroft’s three VISAA tournament games, registering 16 goals, 18 ground balls and controlling most of the draws. Her 92 goals on the season placed her first in Virginia among players registered with MaxPreps. She had seven goals in a 21-3 rout of Wakefield, six in a 10-6 semifinal triumph over Highland and three in an 18-13 victory over Norfolk Collegiate in the championship game.

Emma, a two-time Player of the Year in the Delaney Athletic Conference, recorded 17 goals and six assists in the three tournament games, including nine in the title game. Her 78 goals were also more than the previous Foxcroft single season record. She added 45 assists and her 123 points placed her third in the state, according to MaxPreps.

Pipsy scored 42 goals on the season – an increase of 26 from her freshman year – and her 54 ground balls were second on the team behind Alex's 69. She tallied six goals in the tournament, including two in the championship game.

Lilly’s 31 goals on the season were the most of her four-year varsity career. She, scored six goals in the tournament, including three in the title game.

Kate, who never played lacrosse until her sophomore year, is very fast and used her speed to shadow opposing attackers. She knocked several balls loose during the three-game state tournament and had six ground balls. Her 30 ground balls during the season led all Foxcroft defenders.

Kate and Lilly will in college -- at the University of Virginia and Middlebury College, respectively -- next year but the team returns 8 starters and several strong substitutes next year.
