"Everything We Do Is Curriculum," an article written by Foxcroft's Academic Dean, Alexander O. Northrup, is featured in the 2010-11 edition of NowBoarding, the Official College Prep Boarding School Magazine and Directory, published by The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS). The story, which reflects Foxcroft's mission and philosophy as well as Northrup's personal take on boarding school, appeared in slightly abridged form in the July issue of KeepingTABS, the Association's e-newsletter for member school professionals.
NowBoarding, however, reaches a much larger audience than KeepingTABS. As the primary source for families investigating the world of residential independent schools, it is distributed to families, schools, libraries, consultants, and embassies around the world. Each year, NowBoarding includes just a handful of stimulating stories about education and boarding school life along with the in-depth profiles of the TABS's 300+ member schools.
"Everything We Do is Curriculum" is just such a story. Based on remarks Northrup made at a faculty meeting, it posits that boarding schools offer a unique opportunity for learning to go on in the classroom and out. It affords, he writes, teachers the chance to truly fulfill their vocation by instructing students in the skills they need to succeed in life, conveying the collective wisdom and experience of our culture, and helping students explore what it "means to be a human being at this time, in this place."
