Discovering New Passions: Designing the Counter in the New School Store

After being part of the team that designed and built two podiums for Court's board room last year, seniors Carli M. and Marisa S. took on a special opportunity to do something quite significant: design the transaction counter for the new School Store. The girls saw their real-life counter, which incorporated design elements of the podiums, earlier this month in its new home and made a presentation about the process to the community at last Friday's Morning Meeting. Enjoy reading the report below from Carli on the experience, and be sure to stop in when Court is open to see their thoughtfully designed counter in person!
When Dr. Evans approached me with the idea for this project, I jumped at the opportunity to not only relive my past engineering class but to also work with professionals to make something substantial I could leave behind as a legacy. Plus, it was really cool to make something real out of nothing but ideas!

Working and learning from professionals made the whole project extremely official. We interviewed Mrs. Trussell (in the School Store) to see what would fit her needs as the school store clerk. This made our design have a true purpose.

In the end, the result was spectacular. This extraordinary opportunity was really something I will remember all my life. I never knew I had an interest in designing, but after this experience I may consider pursuing this passion.

Marisa also reflected on the experience, which she described as "truly eye opening," a project that she feels is preparing her well for the next few years at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD):

Being able to have this amazing opportunity to design the school transaction counter has truly opened my eyes to the world of design. The architects, project managers and field managers really walked Carli and I through the process and gave us hints and tips along the way. Every little detail needs to be thought out and planned to ensure the most efficient and functional item can be designed.

We cannot thank enough Ms. Anderson and Forrester Construction for allowing us to be part of their team and leaving a legacy behind for future students!
