About 180 girls from more than 20 schools are expected at the Athletic/Student Center to solve math, science, and engineering problems and figure out which of the eight shady suspects has stolen Susie’s identity. They will be vying for trophies, medals, and a variety of prizes.
Foxcroft, which took the high school title a year ago, will field 14 teams among the 24 from eight high schools that will compete in the morning. A similar number of middle school teams from Maryland, DC, and Virginia will participate in the afternoon, with many of our girls assisting Dr. Maria Evans and the STEM faculty.
Organized by Foxcroft’s STEM faculty, K2M has become a highlight of the winter for participants, volunteers, and spectators, and this year should be no exception. Working in teams of three or four, the girls will take on six separate challenges, including one developed by engineers at K2M, Inc., the Leesburg, VA, biomedical company that has sponsored the event since it started.
Using information about the natural environment, important landmarks, and geographic features of cities around the world, the teams will try to figure out where the suspects have been and see whose travels match the trail of mysterious bills from around the world that Susie has been receiving.
In addition to Foxcroft, the Academy of Science (Sterling, VA), Georgetown Visitation (Washington, DC), Highland School (Warrenton, VA), Loudoun Valley High School (Purcellville, VA), Middleburg Academy, Orange County High School (Orange, VA), Randolph-Macon Academy (Front Royal, VA), and Wakefield School (The Plains, VA) are sending teams.
Defending champion St. Patrick's Episcopal Day School (Washington, DC), leads a group of 13 middle schools that will field 22 teams. Blue Ridge Middle School (Purcellville, VA), Grymes Memorial School (Orange, VA), Harmony Middle School (Hamilton, VA), The Hill School (Middleburg), Immanuel Christian School (Springfield, VA), J. Michael Lunsford Middle School (Chantilly, VA), Mercer Middle School (Aldie, VA), Norwood School (Bethesda, MD), Powhatan School (Boyce, VA), St. John's Episcopal (Olney, MD), Trailside Middle School (Ashburn, VA), and the Village School (Charlottesville, VA) complete the field.
