Cramer, Lane receive Anne K. McGuire Award

Foxcroft School’s Board of Trustees Friday bestowed its highest honor – the Anne Kane McGuire Distinguished Service Award — on Beatty Page Cramer and Thomas D. Lane, two longtime board members and outstanding volunteers who helped harness the energy and enthusiasm of two key constituencies of the Middleburg, VA., school. The surprise presentation took place Friday (April 16) at an all-school meeting that included students, faculty, board members and some surprise guests — the honoree’s families.
Cramer, a member of Foxcroft’s Class of 1966 and outgoing Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees, was instrumental in the restructuring of the Foxcroft Alumnae Association’s mission and leadership as president of the association. Lane, whose wife and two daughters attended Foxcroft, founded the Foxcroft Parents’ Association, which has grown into a formidable force for fundraising and direct service to the school. They were cited for this and for additional service to the school.

A graduate of Vassar and Hofstra Law School, Cramer is an adjunct professor at the latter and a partner at Hughes Hubbard and Reed. She calls Southhampton, NY, Crooks, CO, and West Palm Beach, FL home. Cramer has lent her legal and financial expertise, along with a passion for Foxcroft, to the Board for nearly 12 years, making important contributions, especially as chair of the Audit Committee and, for the past three years, as Vice Chair.

“Her keen understanding of the implications of Sarbanes-Oxley led Foxcroft to compliance long before legislation required it,” reads the citation presented to her by fellow board member Moira Carroll ’83. “Beatty’s broad understanding of legal issues combined with her ability to explain them in layman’s terms has been critical. Indeed, Foxcroft has been the beneficiary of her profound commitment, her deep sense of service and her unmatched leadership skills, as well as her energy, generosity, wisdom, grace, and passion.”

Lane, a graduate of St. James School and Roanoke College, is the president of Lane Engineering, LLC, and a certified engineer. He joined the board in 1997 and has been an important influence on his work on the Building and Grounds Committee.

“As Chair, Tom championed the development of a Foxcroft Campus Master Plan,” reads his citation, presented by trustee Liza Todd Edgerton ‘71, “and guided the Board through the process of establishing it as the ‘roadmap’ for the future of the School.” Lane led the early implementation of the plan by managing the relocation of the tennis courts and the design and construction of the maintenance facility and Athletic/Student Center, as well as serving as a guiding force in early planning for an upcoming dormitory project.

Prior to Cramer and Lane, only 25 individuals had received the McGuire Award, which was established in 1984 in honor of a former trustee and Chairman of the Board who guided the School through some very challenging years.
