Cape Henry Collegiate bests lacrosse team in State semifinal

Cape Henry Collegiate 17 Foxcroft 0

The Foxcroft laxers travelled to Norfolk Friday to take on the #1 seeded Cape Henry Collegiate Dolphins in a state semi-final matchup at Old Dominion University. This was the first trip for Foxcroft to a Division II semi-final game, and the fourth-seeded team did its best against a talented top seed. Although the score would end in a lopsided manner, it was not indicative of the effort and grittiness of the losing side.

The Dolphins held only a 3-0 lead with 11 minutes remaining in the first half, as Foxcroft's defenders played their best game of the season, turning back a strong attack many times to stay within striking distance. Sophomore goalie McKenna A. posted 8 saves early. But draw controls and ground balls by the Dolphins proved to be the difference, and as the defense stayed under constant pressure, the Cape Henry offense began to score.

Foxcroft fell behind 9-0 at half, and although the team kept hustling and fighting through injuries and exhaustion, in the end the Dolphins proved just too much for the visitors. An objective observer would have noticed that although outmatched, the Foxcroft team played with heart and hustle and kept fighting until the final whistle, despite the score, representing the Foxcroft spirit quite well.

While there are no inconsequential losses in the playoffs, the team had much to be proud of in 2012, including a 10-5 record (the first 10-win season in 7 years), the first trip in the state semis in five years, the regular season Delaney Athletic Conference title, five First-Team all DAC players (Caroline F. '13, Lilly M. '14, Charlotte M. '12, Olivia Jane '13 and Carter W. '13) and one honorable mention (Emma R. '15), a successful spring trip, and lots of experience and determination for next year.

We say farewell to ten seniors, Alex, Charlotte, Bea, McKenzie, Devon, Maeve, Gabriela, Lizzie, Claire and our manager, Allie
.

Thanks to all the parents who supported the team this spring, and made the long trip yesterday (especially the parent drivers!), with encouragement and positive cheering, as well as for the many drinks, cupcakes and snacks the team consumed.
