Anne Burridge Named to Achilles Chair for English

Foxcroft Head of School Catherine S. McGehee named Anne B. Burridge to the H. Laurence Achilles Chair for English, one of three endowed chairs at the School, on Thursday, May 26.

Burridge, who has been at Foxcroft since 2013, is only the third holder of the Achilles Chair, named for a legendary English scholar who taught at Foxcroft from 1955-77. As a symbol of the honor, McGehee presented Burridge with an engraved Windsor-style “Foxcroft chair.”
Speaking to several hundred students, teachers, parents and friends who gathered for the annual Awards Assembly on the eve of Commencement, McGehee esteemed Burridge as “the epitome of a master teacher.”

“She stretches her students to read challenging texts, constructively edit their writing, diagram sentences, and analyze rhetorical and poetic strategies in literature,” McGehee added. “Although demanding, she always meets students where they are, encourages them to believe in their abilities, whether in AP Language and Composition or in British Literature, and then reach higher levels of sophistication.”

A New Englander by birth, Burridge attended Phillips Exeter Academy and Middlebury College, where she earned a BA in English and, later, a master’s from its Bread Loaf School of English. Before coming to Foxcroft in 2013, she taught in San Francisco, Tokyo, Princeton, NJ and Danvers, MA, where she spent 10 years teaching boys at St. John’s Preparatory School.

At Foxcroft, Burridge has taught Advanced Placement English Language and Composition, British Literature and several upper-level electives. She has also worked with students to revive the School’s literary magazine, Chimera, served as advisor to the Model UN Club, co-chaired Foxcroft's VAIS 10-year accreditation process and forged a partnership with "Shakespeare in the ‘Burg," a local theater festival.
