A Weekend for Words: The Paul K. Bergan Poetry Festival

In the cold winter month of January, it is essential to warm the soul and keep inspired. The Paul K. Bergan Poetry Festival does just that, and has long been a favorite tradition for students and faculty alike.

Renamed in 2007 in honor of former English teacher Paul Bergan, the Poetry Festival brings established poets to campus to read, to discuss the writing process with students and to critique student writing. It also provides the community with an opportunity to celebrate the spoken word with both competitive and non-competitive readings and a colorful poetry slam. The fun has already begun with early rounds of the competitive readings process taking place in English classes.
The Festival kicks off Friday, January 29, in FoxHound Auditorium with the historically energetic Open Mic, featuring both poetry readings and musical performances, and the Poetry Slam, a freewheeling competition among students that celebrates the art of spoken word poetry. Prizes will be awarded to the top "slammers," as determined by judges.

On Saturday morning, the community will come together to hear readings from our guest poet, Sandra Beasley. An award-winning poet and 2015 National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellow, Ms. Beasley is no stranger to Foxcroft as she gave a reading at the Festival in 2008. Our girls will not only hear some of Ms. Beasley's work but will also benefit from a workshop with her following the readings.

Saturday afternoon, the community will reconvene in FoxHound Auditorium for the competitive student readings, which culminate a month-long selection process. Three finalists from each English level who have been nominated by their peers and qualified by faculty judges will read published works. Non-competitive readings -- by students and faculty -- of original poetry, poetry written in a language other than English or a favorite published poem will follow.
