A Rivalry Renewed: Hounds Top Foxes in Field Hockey

Two goals by senior Allison B. led the Hounds to a 4-0 field hockey victory on Saturday, November 19, in a Big Game marked by a 20-degree drop in temperature, gusty winds, and finally rain — none of which stopped Foxcroft's oldest and most beloved tradition.
Allison's sister Haley '19 and Hound Captain Lindsay W. also scored against Fox goalie Elle L., who made a valiant effort under difficult conditions — at one point the goal behind her blew off its moorings and toppled over — and lots of pressure from the opposition.

The game capped a day of tradition and competition that started out sunny and warm and saw the Cub and Puppy teams play to a hard-fought 0-0 tie in the morning.

But the weather turned almost in an instant just as the two Big Teams were preparing to march onto the field. The Fox and Hound banners hanging along each sideline flapped so wildly that they had to be taken down before the game even started. Spectators who were warm in short sleeves at 1:00 pm were bundled up in parkas, hats, and scarves by the time the game ended about two hours later.

The spirit that has prevailed for more than 100 years, though, was as strong as ever with scores of alumnae, parents, and students cheering their teams on. The rituals, songs, and enthusiasm that make Fox/Hound such a very special tradition were also all in fine form.

Despite their freezing fingers and exhausted bodies, the students assembled as always when Big Game was over to sing to each other, affirming that Foxcroft girls truly are "friends to the end."
