A Record 15 Athletes Receive All-DAC Honors

Foxcroft's athletic program is flourishing -- to put it mildly. Not only did the tennis and field hockey teams both earn number 2 seedings in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II state tournament, but an impressive 15 fall athletes received All-Delaney Athletic Conference honors last week.

Led by DAC cross country champion senior Amy E. and Player of the Year for tennis Annie M., a sophomore, every sport had multiple selections, with field hockey having six players honored, tennis four, volleyball three, and cross country two. The total of 15 set a record for the most Foxcroft selections in one season since the School joined the conference in 2008. The previous best single-season total was 11.
Amy, an all-state selection last year, won the DAC championship in cross country Friday in a course record and personal best time of 20:01 minutes while competing against more than 60 girls. She will participate next week, along with the rest of the Foxcroft team, in the state cross country championships at Woodberry Forest. Patia, a sophomore, also achieved All-DAC honors with a 16th place showing in the race.

Annie helped the undefeated (13-0) tennis team to the conference title and through the state quarterfinals. She alternated between No. 1 and No. 2 singles and played on the No. 2 doubles team. She finished first in the voting by the league’s coaches for All-DAC, resulting in her being named Player of the Year. There are between 60 or 70 girls competing in DAC tennis.

“I think that Annie was selected Player of the Year because she is the number one player on the number one team,” Coach Susan Erba said. “She did lose to Seton’s number one but she beat Fredericksburg Academy’s number one. Annie’s strokes are so impressive that probably everyone, with one possible exception, voted for her.”

Joining Annie on First Team All-DAC are Marina S. '16 and Amalia S. '14. Kelly B. '14, an all-state selection last year and undefeated in both singles and doubles this year, received Honorable Mention. In DAC tennis, only seven players are named to the first team; other vote-getters receive honorable mention.

On the field hockey team, which was ranked No. 1 for much of the year, senior Lilly M. was chosen by rival coaches as a First Team selection for the third straight year. She was joined on the First Team by senior goalkeeper Alicia H., sophomore forward Alex G., and freshman defenders Lindsay W. and Allison B. In addition, sophomore Pipsy S. received Honorable Mention. Alicia, who is a first team selection for the second year in a row, and Lilly were both named to the VISAA all-state team last year.

Only 12 players from more than 90 girls playing field hockey in the DAC are selected to the First Team. Foxcroft had five!

The volleyball team reached the DAC semifinals for only the second time and enjoyed its best season (8-6 overall) since joining the league. The team was paced by new sophomore Kat F., who led the league with a stunning 128 kills en route to a First Team selection. Senior Kate E. and junior Emma R. were named to the Second Team.

Kat was the fourth-leading vote-getter from among the 70-plus volleyball players in the DAC's Divison II. Only 14 players are honored -- seven each for the first and second teams.
