A Memorable Autumn in Athletics

It was an autumn to remember for the athletes of Foxcroft.

Field hockey, tennis, volleyball, and cross country all enjoyed notable seasons that culminated in several athletes being named to all-conference teams.

For the second year in a row, field hockey reached the final game of the VISAA Division II state final and, also for the second straight season, tennis reached the VISAA semifinal round.

Both teams won more games than they did a year ago as field hockey posted a 14-4-2 record and tennis went into the final match of the season with a 13-0 record before losing to Norfolk Collegiate, 7-2, in a semifinal match.
The volleyball team produced a winning season for the first time in at least a decade and, with an 8-6 record, won more games than it did over the last three years combined.

Cross country produced one of the top runners in the state in Amy E. ’14, whose fourth place finish in the VISAA Division II state tournament was the best of any Foxcroft runner ever and earned her All-State honors for the second year in a row.

Amy’s teammates also improved steadily as the season progressed with sophomore Patia F. achieving All-Delaney Athletic Conference honors and freshman Brittany H. showing she is a force to be reckoned with in the future by finishing 40th out of 187 girls in the state meet.

The field hockey team was paced by seniors Lilly M. and Alicia H. and sophomore Alex G. Lilly, a stalwart defender, also scored 10 goals and was the field leader for the team. Alicia, one of the state’s best goaltenders, posted 11 shutouts, including a clutch 1-0 blanking of Carlisle in the state semifinal match.

Alex was an unstoppable force on offense, collecting a team-leading 35 goals and seven assists. She had four goals in a state tournament first-round 5-0 victory over Highland and notched the only goal of the game in the 1-0 semifinal victory over Carlisle.

Lilly, Alicia, Alex, and freshmen Allison B. and Lindsay W. achieved First Team All-DAC recognition and sophomore Pipsy S. received Honorable Mention.

Tennis was led by seniors Kelly B. and Amalia S. and sophomores Marina S. and Annie M. Kelly went undefeated in singles with a 14-0 record and also teamed with Amalia to form a doubles partnership that was unbeaten until the final match of the season against Norfolk Collegiate.

Marina, playing No. 1 singles most of the season, posted a 10-4 record in singles and was 7-2 in doubles while Annie went 12-1 singles and 6-2 in doubles. Annie was named the Player of the Year in the DAC. Marina and Amalia also received First Team All-DAC honors while Kelly was Honorable Mention.

In volleyball, sophomore Kat F., junior Emma R., and senior Kate E. were the sparkplugs. Kat, a newcomer to Foxcroft, showed a powerful spike as an outside hitter and finished the season with 128 kills. Emma, the team’s setter, recorded 197 assists and Kate, a solid all-around player, led the team in digs.

Kat was named to the First Team All-DAC while Emma and Kate both achieved Second Team status.
