A Day of Giving Back

Foxcroft students and faculty spread out around campus and into neighboring communities Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 15) to lend their hands and hearts to an afternoon dedicated to community service -- a Foxcroft tradition as old as the School itself.

Founder Charlotte Haxall Noland set the tone 100 years ago with outreach that varied from presenting an annual Christmas Pageant with presents of clothes and toys for all the town's children to establishing the Middleburg Clinic and joining the war effort in the 1940s. Every step of the way students were involved, so that they might help those lesss fortunate and also themselves, by developing an Understanding Heart. Some say that community service permeates the air at Foxcroft.

"Giving back" is a a recurring theme all year long. Several student clubs are dedicated to service and the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Walk, Think Pink Basketball Tournament, and Junior Class Walkathon have joined the Pageant as annual events that benefit others.

Wednesday, however, was a special opportunity to get hands on beyond the campus. Girls visited Middleburg Humane in Marshall, Piedmont Child Care in Upperville, and Fauquier Food Bank and Habitat for Humanity in Warrenton. They helped children with their homework at Windy Hill, painted sets a Hill School, and cleaned out the pantry at Seven Loaves in Middleburg.

On campus, projects for St. Jude’s Hospital, So Others Might Eat, and our own theater department (get ready for Parents' Weekend!) kept girls and teachers busy in FoxHound, the Roomies Kitchen, and the Art Room. Hard rain kept the the Goose Creek Association group indoors but they learned all about this important waterway and the life -- good and bad -- in it as well as the details of water monitoring the stream.

All in all, it was a busy and rewarding afternoon! Many thanks parent volunteer Beth O'Quinn (Grace '11, Molly '15)  and to Dean of Students Jessi Coil for organizing this initiative and giving our girls so many gratifying experiences.
