11 Foxcroft athletes earn All-DAC honors

Foxcroft School, winner of the Delaney Athletic Conference’s field hockey championship, dominated that sport’s All-DAC team with six selections -- including co-MVP -- and collected 11 mentions in all Tuesday (Nov. 11) when the all-conference fall sports teams were announced during a school-wide assembly.
The conference coaches named senior co-captain Whitney W. of Broad Run, VA, co-MVP of the league after she led Foxcroft to a 10-3 record (8-1 in the DAC). Junior midfielder Meredith H. and forwards Julienne B. and Ashton M., were named to the All-DAC First Team along with Whitney. Senior midfielder Julia G. and junior goalkeeper Hilary K. received honorable mention.

In other sports, tennis co-captain Olivia M., a senior from Washington, DC, was one of just six players named to the All-DAC team and senior co-captain Gabrielle D., of Coral Gables, FL, and sophomore Jordan C. of Moorestown, NJ, were selected to the league’s cross country squad. Junior middle hitter Anabelle T. (Middleburg, VA) and freshman middle hitter Charlotte W. (Big Horn, WY) received All-DAC Division I volleyball honorable mention. This is Foxcroft’s first year in the DAC after 23 years in the Independent School League (ISL).

The only four-year member of the varsity field hockey team team, Whitney played both center mid and center back. She scored four goals and one assist in Conference play, sharing the MVP honor with a player at Fredericksburg Academy. “Whitney’s stick skills, hustle and overall finesse are unparalleled,” said Head Coach and Athletic Director Katie Ryan Kantz.

Ashton, a junior from Round Hill, VA, led the team in goals with 13 goals -- including the score that gave Foxcroft a 1-0 victory over Highland School in the DAC championship game. Julienne, a swift senior from Charlottesville, displayed college level stick skills and ball movement in scoring three assists and two goals. A Middleburg resident, Meredith, scored four goals and three assists and impressed with her ability to identify an opponent’s weakness and create scoring opportunities.

Hilary, of Herndon, VA stopped more than 100 shots in collecting seven shutouts (six in the DAC) and Philomont, VA, resident Julia had three goals and three assists despite missing most of the season due to mononucleosis.

Olivia, who has been a member of the tennis team for four years and captain for two, played first singles and teamed with co-captain Vivian L. for first doubles all season, winning many key matches. “I’ve been coaching for 20 years,” said Head Coach Stewart Herbert and I’ve never worked with anyone who demonstrated such extraordinary sportsmanship and leadership as Olivia. She mentored everyone on the team, including the less experienced and simply exemplified everything that is good about sports.”

The Foxcroft cross-country team owes its very existence in large part to Gabby, who arrived four years ago wanting to run and didn’t let the absence of a cross-country team get in her way. Although she was hurt much of this year, she finished 6th in the one all-DAC races she ran and the coaches unanimously decided to name her to the All-Conference team -- an honor generally reserved for the top 15 finishers at the conference championship. Jordan earned her All-DAC honor by finishing fifth at that meet.

Although Volleyball struggled this year, with an 0-12 record, Annabelle and Charlotte demonstrated a lot of heart and leadership capacity to earn All-DAC honorable mention. Annabelle led the team in both kills and blocks while Charlotte was second in both categories.
