24 Students Honored for Excellence on National French Contest

Freshman Itzi Y. got a perfect score on the French I exam to earn a Platinum Medal and lead an impressive group of 24 Foxcroft students honored for excellence on the National French Contest, teacher Arnaud Boulestreau announced recently.

Itzi's performance placed her first, not only in Virginia but in the entire United States -- out of 21,791 students who took the Level I exam. Two students, Lu C. '19, in Level I, and Patia F. '16, in Level IV, placed second in the state, while junior Michelle A. took third among Virginian Level II contestants. They all received gold medals.
"Le Grand Concours," as the contest is officially known, is an annual competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French.

In addition to Itzi’s platinum and Lu's gold, eight other medals went to French I students this year. Freshmen Amara B., Maria M. and Jordan W. also earned gold; Renee X. '17 earned silver, and Grayson B. '18, Annabelle C. '18, Lily F. '19 and Chloe X. '17 all received bronze medals.

In French IV, three students placed in the 95th percentile -- Isabella Z. '17, Lindy D. '17 as well as Patia F.  -- to earn gold medals. Silver medals went to Jessie H. '16, Carli M. '16 and Olivia R. '17. Nearly 11,000 students across the country took the Level IV exam.

Five out of the nine Foxcroft students in French II students scored above the 75th percentile. In addition to Michelle's gold, Saylor H. '18 and Winnie M. '16 took home silver medals, and Mia B. '18 and Allegra S. '18 collected bronze.

Among the 18,140 students who completed the French III exam nationwide, three Foxcroft students scored above the 75th percentile. Juniors Sofia T. and Carolina W. earned silver medals, and junior Elle L. earned bronze.

Overall, 33 of the 37 Foxcroft students who participated in “Le Grand Concours,” scored above the 50th percentile, and 24 scored in the top 25th percentile -- quite the accomplishment! In the past three years, M. Boulestreau has seen the achievements of his students grow from three medals in 2014 to 21 last year, and now 24 this year. As they say in France: C'est magnifique!
