Juniors Raise Funds and Fun with Colorful Walkathon

Puffs of colored powder filled the air along Foxcroft School's cross-country course Friday afternoon when members of the Class of 2016 staged a colorful Junior Class Walkathon. Turning the traditional fundraiser into an offbeat "color run," students ignored the chilly weather to raise money and have lots of fun for a very good cause, the Loudoun Abused Women's Shelter (LAWS).

"At LAWS, we don't think anyone should have to leave an abusive situation alone," said Executive Director Nicole Acosta, who spoke to participants beforehand. "We seek to walk with them every step of the way. By walking today, you are helping us walk with women and children as they embark on a difficult journey. We thank you."
Junior Class President Lilly S. thanked everyone for coming and, along with members of the Walkathon Committee and some help from Cross Country Coach Matt Mohler and the Junior Class advisors, did a great job of organizing the event. Designated juniors left to take their stations and then 100+ runners, walkers and strollers -- in that order -- took off from the Athletic/Student Center, mostly wearing nice, clean, white Walkathon shirts.

An hour later, they were all back, with pink, green, yellow and blue powder covering their clothes and hair -- and big smiles covering their faces. To say they had fun was an understatement.

At several stations along the way, teams of juniors tossed handfuls of harmless colored powder. Some participants veered away from the stations to avoid the sprinkling, some ran bravely through the showers, and many slowed down and helped douse themselves and their friends with heavy artillery. When it was all over, a rainbow of students, teachers, faculty families and dogs had done their part to help.

LAWS, also known as Citizens for Social Justice, works with adult and child victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse in Loudoun County.

The 50+ members of the Class of 2016 chose to raise awareness and money for LAWS, Class President Lilly S. said, because "our school is founded on the belief that women's empowerment and equality are important principles to be recognized and supported."

The Class invites all to support this important cause and help them reach their fundraising goal with a contribution, either by check or credit card.

To donate by check, please make it payable to the Loudoun Abused Womens Shelter (LAWS) and mail it to Junior Class Wallkathon 2016; Foxcroft School; P.O. Box 5555; Middleburg, VA 20118, or give it to a member of the class.
