Carli and Stephanie Earn Honors at VA NATS Singing Competition!

Voice students Carli M. '16, Stehanie Z. '17 and Victoria Z. '16 all performed exceptionally Saturday at the Virginia state auditions for the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) in Norfolk -- and two of them earned Honors recognition and spots in the next round of the prestigious national competition!

Stephanie and Carli received high enough marks from the judges to join a select group that will compete at the Mid-Athlantic Regional at the University of Maryland on Saturday, March 28.

Amy Asbury, their teacher, is delighted with how her students performed. "These girls are so dedicated," she said. "It is wonderful when that drive and dedication combines with natural talent like theirs. They should feel very proud of their accomplishment."

At Saturday's competition, held on the campus of Old Dominion University, students had to demonstrate a command of vocal skills in both the contemporary Broadway "belt" style and in the more classical "legit" style from the musical theater's Golden Age (1960s and earlier). More than 200 individual male and female high school students competed, with approximately 40 in the same age/level Musical Theater category as the Foxcroft girls.

Carli performed songs from Last Five Years and The Boyfriend. Stephanie also performed repertoire from Last Five Years, 110 in the Shade and Thoroughly Modern Millie. Foxcroft faculty member Eric Dombrowski accompanied the girls during their live auditions.

The upcoming Mid-Atlantic Regional round is reserved for the highest scoring singers from Washington D.C., South Carolina, North Carolina, Maryland, and Virginia.  The top three singers from that regional round will advance to the nationals, where students will be competing for cash award up to $1,200.
