Foxes Beat Hounds to Win the Cup After 11-Year Drought!!

    3/3/2012
It’s over!! A drought that lasted more than a decade has finally come to an end. The Foxes beat the Hounds, 26-17, on Saturday to win the prestigious Big Game and take home the Cup for the first time in 11 years. Tears and cheers erupted all around in Mary Louise Leipheimer Gymnasium when the final second clicked off the clock of what had been a hard-fought battle played before a packed, thunderous crowd.

For student Foxes, many of whom were in first or second grade the last time the Cup sported blue ribbons after Big Game, and for Fox alumnae and faculty who have worn the blue and pink proudly despite the long suffering, the victory was sweet indeed. Fox captain Kristen T. '12 and Fox Big Team co-captains Debbie '13 and Melanie '13, wore smiles as wide as their faces as they tied the ribbons.

As always, affirmations of friendship among and between teams and one more spirited SingSing followed, capping an exciting week that saw Fox Little Team and Hound Middle Team each take a victory on Friday.

Sparked by Charlotte ’12 and Lilly ’14, who scored eight points apiece, the Foxes showed their mettle in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Hounds, 12-3, to turn a 14-14 tie after three quarters into a comfortable victory.

In fairness to the Hounds, they were forced to play much of the second half without their point guard and co-captain Rebecca ’13, who suffered a broken nose in the third quarter while driving to the basket. Her floor leadership and 3-point basket had helped the Hounds build a three-point advantage at 11-8 early in the third quarter. Kitty ’12 took over at the point and the Hounds hung tough.

The Foxes, though, were relentless. Tenacious defense by Charlotte, Lilly, and Debbie were the keys to victory. Charlotte, the tallest player on the court, used her long arms and aggressiveness to constantly badger the Hounds’ big front line and forced many off-balance shots that failed to find the basket.

Lilly was everywhere, using her cat-like quickness to corral loose balls and grab several rebounds from taller players. When the team needed a basket she was there for them, too, scoring all eight of her points in the second half.  Debbie added four points while Alex ’12 and Melanie each scored three points.
The Hounds were led by Hound Captain Lizzie ’12, Big Team co-captain Cat ’13, and center McKenna ’14 with four points each.
