The program is designed to give motivated young women with a special interest in the biological sciences the opportunity to participate in ground-breaking research projects being conducted at the university level.

Biology professors from the University of Virginia, along with Julie Ervin, Science Department Chair at Foxcroft School, are coordinating this unique, hands-on opportunity, available to young women from area high schools.

During the course of the program, students perform research, conduct experiments, and write a journal-style paper. Students gain laboratory experience with techniques such as gel electrophoresis, polymerase chain reaction, mini-preps, and western blots.

The program culminates with a trip to the University of Virginia to visit laboratory facilities and present findings. (Trip expenses are not covered in the price.) In addition, the paper will be submitted to the Siemens Competition for Math, Science & Technology in the fall.
