Accomplished Potter Shares Her Life in Clay with Students

Artist Gay Smith visited campus Monday evening as part of the Helen Cudahy Niblack '42 Lecture Series to share her life as a ceramicist with students. Ms. Smith discussed the evolution of her work as she found inspiration from external sources, and later from her own work as she found her unique voice as an artist. Her pots and mugs often incorporated aspects of the human form in their composition, which students viewed both through her presentation and firsthand in the small collection she brought for display.
Tuesday morning, Ms. Smith joined Art teacher Gary Cox and students in the Ceramics room to throw on the wheel. In her presentation, Ms. Smith had described her process on the wheel, but seeing her work in person allowed students to take away more from the artist to use in their art classes. Ms. Smith challenged girls to focus on making well-formed cylinders, which would be the foundation of their other pursuits on the wheel.

Established by Austi Brown '73 in honor of her mother, the Niblack Arts Lecture Series brings a variety of literary, performing and fine artists, artisans and designers to Foxcroft to share their work and experience while engaging the School in the creative process.
